It is, but this is an unconventional type of beta read. I'm posting chapters every 2 weeks and inviting feedback via the comments. Any feedback given earns a future comp for chapters behind the paywall.

What a cliffhanger here!

Powerful. Evil speaks.

I appreciate that! There are some chapters so enmeshed in what's coming, any response I think of risks a spoiler. But I could say so much. Thanks for reading!

Matt,

I can see it building … always guessing where it will land. This is extremely well constructed! I’m loving the slow burn and the feel of “Fallen" and "Primal Fear."

Please know that this Southern Gothic lands close to home. I grew up in rural Mississippi near New Orleans. Got some Cajun in me. Also, lived in North Carolina for a spell while in Army. I know these parts all too well — deer stands, bars, knowing everybody and everybody’s business, and everybody knowing yours. I can give real world names to your archetypes. And have seen or experienced their tragedies, including losing a brother … to, of all things, a fall. Maybe that’s TMI, but know that I give you much kudos for accuracy.

Again, extremely well done. I very much look forward to seeing how plays out. Thank you for letting me read!

That means so much, Patrick. I've lived in North Carolina all my life but have never actually been to Louisiana. Creek Hollow is pieced together from pop culture references and the belief that some things are universal throughout the South. I've been nervous someone would tell me I got it all wrong (especially the phonetic breakdown of Tracker's dialect), so it means a lot to hear it wasn't way off base.

I'm sorry to hear about your brother and hope reading about Job wasn't too hard. As introduced in the first chapter, this book carries a lot of death with it, and I tried to approach each with reverence and gravity. Please let me know if anything hits wrong or should at least come with a warning.

You're fast approaching the paywall and I'm away from my computer, but I'm going to comp you a week when I get home so you can catch up.

Thanks again for reading and even more for the feedback!
